Are you a crafty person and are planning a wedding?  You and the groom are unique, right?  Well, how about creating your own unique cake toppers for your wedding cake?

When I got married, I was a very crafty bride! I wanted to make everything including the wedding cake! While I did allow the site to create the wedding cake, I made the design for it.  I also made the cake toppers to adorn the top of the cake.

Here is what I did! I bought some Sculpey clay from my local craft store that I could put in my own oven at home to create my cake toppers.  I like to use coupons to buy the clay at half price to save money.

Now my husband and I go by the nicknames of Monkey and Kangaroo, so I wanted to design a Monkey Groom and a Kangaroo Bride.  I used my monkey and kangaroo stuffed animals as the model for the cake toppers and looked at other cake toppers to gauge the size that I should create them.

Then I molded away and put each one in the oven at 275° F for about fifteen minutes or so.  Once they were hardened, I was able to add the paint to match what my husband and I were going to wear for the wedding.  My friend gave me the idea of using the scraps of fabric from my wedding dress that was removed when I had it altered.  Brilliant idea!

I was able to carefully glue on the fabric and added some beads on top of the kangaroo’s head to represent my beaded veil.  I was very pleased with the results of my unique cake toppers!

One thing I have learned since then is to use aluminum foil to bulk out the inside of your clay creation.  My cake toppers were very heavy since I just used pure clay for it.  I was worried that they would sink into the cake, but the baker did an excellent job of anchoring them on top. I have since then tried the aluminum foil with other clay creations and it works wonderfully! It also saves you money on clay with less being used!

I hope this post has inspired you to create the unique cake topper that you are dreaming of! Good luck brides!
